World War II, brutal and tedious corporate architecture has increasingly dominated our urban and industrial landscapes. Sterile shopping malls, deteriorating city centers, joyless housing tracts, and hulking business parks bear witness to the barren legacy of modern architecture. Their continuing presence has led to the view that public buildings are not sympathetic to either people or to the environment.
In response to this disheartening trend, David Pearson incorporated his background in housing, the environment, and holistic design into a quest for a "natural architecture" that revives the ancient integrity of the home. This long and wide-ranging journey culminated in his groundbreaking volume, The Natural House Book, in 1989. World War II, brutal and tedious corporate architecture has increasingly dominated our urban and industrial landscapes. Sterile shopping malls, deteriorating city centers, joyless housing tracts, and hulking business parks bear witness to the barren legacy of modern architecture. In Earth to Spirit, Pearson continues his personal odyssey to discover the secret of buildings that emphasize the beauty and freedom of nature and create a sense of physical and spiritual well-being.
With camera in hand, Pearson has traveled the globe, finding glimmers of hope in a rich array of both ancient and modern architecture. His journey spans the history of architecture, leading us back in time to some of the earliest structures fashioned by humanity; to enduring traditional dwellings such as yurts and tipis; and, finally, to contemporary buildings that display a new sensibility to nature. His remarkable photographs reveal how we can integrate architecture into both our lives and our landscapes by combining the innate wisdom of ecology with a concern for health and spiritual awareness. With a foreword by leading architect William McDonough, these elements are woven together in an insightful text that encourages us to respect the lessons of the past and incorporate them into modern, environmentally sound, health-conscious building technology.
A revolutionary and thought-provoking blend of images and ideas. Earth to Spirit invites you to join David Pearson in his quest for a place where the land, the home, and the spirit co-exist harmoniously. Vissza
