THE NATURE OF
AMERICA
Images by North America's Premier Nature Photographers
Created by BUI Fortney and David Middleton With a Foreword by Charted Kuralt
The North American continent, including the United States, Canada, and northern Mexico, has an astonishing range of ecological diversity that, until now, has never been visually documented in a single book. This rich natural heritage is the inspiration behind The Nature of America, which brings together images from the very best nature photographers, the results of a yearlong project to photograph the greatest parks and wild areas of North America.

The idea was hatched several years ago when Bill Fortney and David Middleton, both professional nature photographers, took a break from shooting wildflowers in the Great Smoky Mountains and let their imaginations run wild across America. Why not gather America's best nature photographers and set them loose for a year to photograph the areas and subjects they love most?
Selecting the photographers was difficult. An initial Hst of 200 was eventually whittled down to the top 33, whose work appears in the book:

Assembled with one goal in mind — to capture on film what they cherish most about wild America—this prestigious group of photographers submitted over 5,000 pictures that were edited down to the 204 images published here. None of these photographs have been digitally enhanced or manipulated in any way. Also, no captive mammals were photographed, and no wildflowers were damaged or moved to be more photogenic.
Dividing the continent into ecological regions was another challenge. Using obvious geographic and ecological borders, David Middleton devised 12 "ecoregions" for the United States, northern Mexico, and Canada: Pacific Coast, Cascade Mountains, Sierra Nevada Mountains, Desert, Basin and Plateau, Rocky Mountains, Grasslands, Southern Appalachian Mountains, Atlantic Coast, Northern Hardwoods, Taiga, and Tundra. Some of these ecoregions are easily recognized; others are composed of several smaller areas: for example, the southern Great Lakes and inland New England are combined in the "Northern Hardwoods."
David Middleton's text and captions provide a brief natural history of each area, highlighting what is most unique and delightful about the ecoregions and describing what you see in the pictures. A Photographer's Seasonal Calendar is provided at the end to help you plan when to visit places all across America at the peak of what each has to offer visually. A percentage of the royalties from this book will be donated to the National Park Foundation to help restore and preserve our National Parks.
The Nature of America is a book that future generations will treasure, a landmark reference for what is best and most beautiful about the abundant American vwlderness that is ours to protect and enjoy. Vissza
