CANCER: The Misguided Cell
David M. Prescott and Abraham S. Flexer
Few texts about cancer are so comprehensive yet so understandable as CANCER: THE MISGUIDED CELL. The authors—an eminent cell biologist and a biologist-science writer—provide a scientific basis for understanding cancer and for sorting out the conflicting claims and counterclaims about the causes and cures of cancer that are reported daily in the news media.
In the early chapters, the authors explain clearly the central concepts of modern cellular and molecular biology upon which current views of cancer are based. They then establish that the vast majority of cancers may be caused by environmental agents such as chemicals and radiation that induce mutations, and by viruses that alter the genetic makeup of the cell. After reviewing present methods for treating human cancers, they argue that enough is now known about the disease to support effective programs to prevent cancer. The concluding chapter explores some... Tovább
