This book, written by anaesthetists primarily for anaesthetists, brings together the latest information about neonatal physiology, pre-operative assessment, intra-operative management and postoperative care.
It will enable any anaesthetist with a basic grounding in the subject to acquire a deep understanding of the problems presented by the neonate and young infant. Many of these problems are also seen to a lesser degree in older children.
The authors have followed the general philosophy of the Series by concentrating on the aspects of neonatal anaesthesia which are of immediate clinical relevance to the anaesthetist. The differences between adult and neonatal anaesthesia largely reflect differences in physiology and, for this reason, the first chapter of the book is devoted to perinatal physiology. Wherever possible the authors have linked anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, neonatal medicine and anaesthetic practice.

Neonatal Anaesthesia will fill a significant gap in the world literature, being the only book on this subject to appear within the last 20 years.
Current Topics in Anaesthesia Series
General Editors Stanley A. Feldman Cyril F. Scurr
In anaesthesia, failure to keep abreast of advances can seriously affect the standard of patient care. The need for continuing education is widely recognized and indeed in some countries it is mandatory. However, since the spread of knowledge in this field is so extensive and so rapid, the problem is to select and retrieve the information that is of immediate value and clinical relevance. The Current Topics in Anaesthesia Series provides a solution to this problem.
The General Editors have selected those topics where there is a particular need for a digest of a large amount of literature, and the need for a clear statement about the relevance of information. The authors have been chosen for their ability to offer a mature judgement on the importance of the new material.
The presentation will be clear and concise and excessive use of specialist jargon will be avoided. It is hoped that this Series will avoid the disadvantages both of the large textbook with its prolonged period of gestation and the detailed monograph with its highly specialized appeal, and that it will make a valuable contribution to continuing education in anaesthesia.
