Third Edition
Edited by
Leo !Strauss and Joseph Cropsey
Strauss and Cropsey's History of Political Philosophy has, since its original publication in 1963, provided an unequaled introduction to the thought of chief contributors to the Western tradition of political philosophy from classical Greek antiquity to the twentieth century. Written by experts on the various philosophers, this volume has set a standard of excellence for books in its field.

An essay has been added, in the form of an epilogue, on the deceased editor, Leo Strauss. New essays have been written on Aristotle, Burke, and Bentham and James Mill.
As with earlier editions, the contributors to this volume aim at encouraging the reader to understand the work of each philosopher as he himself did,... Tovább

The third edition differs significantly from its predecessors. The scope of its coverage has been expanded to include Thucydides and Xenophon in ancient times and, in modern times, Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. An essay has been added, in the form of an epilogue, on the deceased editor, Leo Strauss. New essays have been written on Aristotle, Burke, and Bentham and James Mill.
As with earlier editions, the contributors to this volume aim at encouraging the reader to understand the work of each philosopher as he himself did, rather than as a phenomenon of intellectual or social history. The interpretive material in this book does not, the editors warn, attempt to replace a careful reading of the texts under discussion. Rather, it should stimulate the student to refer persistently to the primary texts, for which there can be no substitute. Vissza
