AGuideto § Drawing Daniel M. Mendelowitz A Guide to Drawing offers an ingenious step-by-step program to help the beginner develop basic drawing skills and techniques. A series of 150 drawing projects of increasing complexity guides the novice draftsperson in the process of learning to see as an artist sees and then translating these perceptions into graphic expression. The text is lavishly illustrated with more than 400 black-andwhite reproductions and 21 fullcolor plates, most of which display the drawings of masters throughout the history of art. These works offer classic solutions to age-old drawing challenges, as well as provide visual delight in themselves. The directions in each project are specific and easy to follow and, at the same time, allow wide latitude for personal interpretation and expression. The exercises never give rigid examples for you to copy, since the author feels that each artist's individual potential is the most important element to be developed. At the... Tovább

At the end of this remarkable program, you will have painlessly absorbed essential drawing habits and skills, while at the same time begun to achieve a unique style. A Guide to Drawing begins with an introduction to the simplest artists' materials: charcoal, pencil, ball-point pen, felt-tip pen, brush and ink. The first several exercises help the reader to "loosen up" with free sketching, (Continued on back flap)
doodling, and similar experiences. Then, single chapters treat the all-important art elements of line, value, perspective, texture, and color-always explored through the device of drawing projects. A more thorough investigation of the various wet and dry media follows, after which the author guides his readers through the four classic areas of study: figure drawing, portraiture, landscape, and still life. The most important ingredient in the artist's repertoire-imagination- forms the subject of the last chapter. All in all, A Guide to Drawing manages to combine two oftencontradictory qualities. It is at once a thoroughly practical, down-to-earth handbook and an elegant, beautifully produced art book. Daniel M. Mendelowitz is Emeritus Professor of Art and Education at Stanford University. His other books include Drawing, A History of American Art, and Children Are Artists. An exhibiting painter, Mr. Mendelowitz has had more than two dozen oneman shows, and many of his paintings belong to permanent collections. Vissza
