doodling, and similar experiences. Then, single chapters treat the all-important art elements of line, value, perspective, texture, and color-always explored through the device of drawing projects. A more thorough investigation of the various wet and dry media follows, after which the author guides his readers through the four classic areas of study: figure drawing, portraiture, landscape, and still life. The most important ingredient in the artist's repertoire-imagination- forms the subject of the last chapter. All in all, A Guide to Drawing manages to combine two oftencontradictory qualities. It is at once a thoroughly practical, down-to-earth handbook and an elegant, beautifully produced art book. Daniel M. Mendelowitz is Emeritus Professor of Art and Education at Stanford University. His other books include Drawing, A History of American Art, and Children Are Artists.
