About this book
The Dadaists rejected existing culture on the grounds, largely, that it belonged to the same society that had produced the First World War. To be an 'art lover' in 1916 seemed to them to be sheer hypocrisy. But exasperation released strange forces, many of which had been latent in the art of the past. The Dadaists rejected existing culture on the grounds, largely, that it belonged to the same society that had produced the First World War. To be an 'art lover' in 1916 seemed to them to be sheer hypocrisy. But exasperation released strange forces, many of which had been latent in the art of the past. Isolated artists, from Bosch to Lewis Carroll, had donethis before; but it was notuntil ayoung French doctor called André Breton met a number of young Dadaists, and discovered the works of Freud, that a systematic exploitation of dreams and involuntary imagery began in literature and in art. This was Surrealism. An awkward movementfor art historians because of its wildly differing styles. Surrealism has been a central influence in twentieth-century art. Some artists give a meticulous representation of a totally unreal world ; others follow a hint contained in Dada and build up shapes encountered at random. The essence is the power of the imagination.
