Many of those who develop an interest in économies do so as a resuit of their prior interest in économie policy. This book, which offers a first-year undergraduate course in macro-economics, places its main emphasis on theory. Nevertheless, it makes a consistent attempt, particularly in the exercises which follow each chapter, to apply économie theory both to published economic data and to policy problems. Its readers will find thatthey are given ample opportunity to learn économies in the best of ail possible ways - by working out probleme.
Mathematically the book is not advanced. It requires no knowledge of the calculus. It assumes only the level of skill required for success in the G.C.E. '0' level examination. Admittedly it makes plentiful use of symbols and the notion of a function. But this is done not to teach the reader mathematics, butto increase his confidence in and familiarity with a formof présentation increasingly common in texts, monographs and the learned iournalsW
The underlying approach of this book regards économies as a discipline concerned with measurable and quantifiable concepts. Published data are used for systematic description and the reader who conscientiously and critically works through the exercises will find ample opportunity t employ published data in simple tests of the hypotheses and prédictions of economic theory.
In the last chapters of this book macro-economic theory is applied directly to problems of policy and the requirements, in terms of quantitative information, of the successful conduct of policy are given appropriate emphasis. Vissza
