The General Editor, Geoffrey Broughton, began to teach English as a foreign language during his army service with Mauritian troops. After wide experience of teaching in schools, he took up the training of teachers of English, first at the Malayan Teachers' Training College, Kirkby, and since 1963 at the University of London Institute of Education. Teaching English and lecturing to teachers has taken him to Austria, Brazil, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, Hungary, Iran, Nigeria, Poland and Spain.
