The movement of these peoples continued for thousands of years: some of the later arrivals were taller and darker, others were small and fawn-coloured. Some made their way down the very length of the Americas while others settled i n the northern forests: some stayed in the northern latitudes which had made their bridge to America, while others sought the grasslands, or the rich sea-coasts. And there were others who followed a new impulse and developed civilisations which astounded the Europeans—and filled their minds with so that the original glory of the New World was destroyed.
Who were the American Indians? The European explorers who thought they had found a new way to Asia stumbled instead upon a world they had never known existed, and Columbus died believing that the New World was merely a part of easternmost Asia.
