'[It] should be required reading not only for those fortunate enough to live in a Cotswold house but for everyone, everywhere, who cares about English architecture.' . John Julius Norwich
f I ^ his book provides a unique and timely appreciation of the architecture of the I Cotswolds in terms of its characteristic building material, Cotswold stone, and a practical and informative guide to its use, conservation and care. Illustrated with over 150 colour and black and white photographs, its combination of visual inspiration and practical advice will stimulate a greater appreciation of the qualities and treatment of Cotswold stone by enthusiasts, professionals and the general public.
The book begins with an introduction to the Cotswold landscape and its vernacular architecture, its natural history and human habitation. It describes the geological formation of the region and the different varieties of Hmestone. The authors then explore the use of stone from quarrying to building, conservation and repair. The development of the Cotswold style of architecture is traced, with guidance on preservation. A particular strength of the text is the six case studies which it presents in detail. These outline the sensitive and skilful adaptation of different buildings from a small cottage in the Upper Frome Valley to a miller's house near Stroud. The appendices, which have been updated for this new paperback edition, give comprehensive information on selecting professionals, relevant conservation and building legislation, and sources of advice, materials and training.
