The introductory paper establishes the conceptual
framework of simulation in relationship to the
economic theory of the firm. This is followed
by a discussion of current practices and trends
resulting from several field surveys. A dozen
papers then present simulation models for
total corporate systems, followed by several
papers for specific functional operation
systems. A contrast to simulation used in profit
organizations is offered in one paper that
presents a simulation model for a large university
Several papers present the use of corporate
simulation models for training purposes. The
final papers in this volume discuss experimental
testing and the philosophy and problems in
the administrative use of simulation models.
The symposium at which these papers were
presented was held in Seattle at the University
of Washington on March 23-25, 1970. The
symposium was jointly sponsored by the
College on Simulation and Gaming of the
institute of Management Science and by the
Graduate School of Business Administration at
the University of Washington. The symposium
was the second one held under the leadership
of the College on Simulation and Gaming. The
first symposium, at Duke University in October,
1968, featured the presentation of a series of
papers on "The Design of Computer Simulation
Experiments." These papers have been collected
in a volume that can be obtained from the
Duke University Press.
Albert N. Schrieber is a professor of business
administration at the University of Washington.
He is the author of several books and many
papers and is the originator of the TOP MAN
Business Game, a pioneer simulation used in
collegiate undergraduate and graduate courses
and in executive development programs.
