For this new edition Sir Herbert Read has completely revised the illustrations, which form the core of the book, and re-written his text to include a new generation of artists. His study of the present state of British painting and sculpture now runs from Ben Nicholson to Peter Blake, and from Henry Moore to Anthony Caro, with biographical notes on the artists mentioned. The author's mastery of the subject allows him to isolate the major trends among the many stylistic possibilities open to British artists as well as to describe the background and influences behind modern art.
