When The Hay wain was exhibited in Paris in 1824 it caused a sensation. Admired by Delacroix and Corot (who were both influenced by him), Constable was thenceforward to enjoy a continuously high reputation in nineteenth-century France. And yet the English public took little account of him until long after his death. Ironically, he is now regarded as in many ways the most * national' of English artists—certainly the supreme painter of the English scene. Unlike his great contemporary, Turner, he never travelled abroad, but directed all his efforts to recording the unemphatic outlines, the changing weather and light, the towering cloudscapes of pastoral England—above all, of his native Suffolk. Combining the lessons that he had learned from the seventeenth-century Dutch school with his own remarkable gifts and his intense regional feeling, he extended the whole realm of landscape painting and thus made an immensely important contribution to the art of the world.
