In Hungary, a large, nearly complete, and population-based data base of congenital limb deficiency cases, in which the diagnosis had been validated, was evaluated. Though the earliest known written records of limb defects are those written on clay tablets found at Nineveh, in the archives of the Assyrian king Asshurbanipal (668-626 B. C), in the 1990s the cause of these congenital abnormalities is not known in the majority of cases. The main purpose of this survey was to study etiological factors in this group of congenital abnormalities. The first step was to separate the different categories and groups/types of congenital limb defiencies, in order to work with the most homogeneous entities possible. Thus, the categories of isolated and multiple cases were separated, and six different groups/types of congenital limb deficiencies (terminal transverse, amnio-genic, radial and tibial, ulnar-fibular, split hand and/or foot, intercalary) were differentiated among the isolated cases.... Multiple (syndromic) cases had also a detailed analysis; following this, a case-control epidemiological study was performed.
The international collaboration of German (W. Lenz), Canadian (J. A. Evans), and Hungarian experts (A. E. Czeizel and I. Kodaj) has resulted in some new findings and systematic description of different groups/types of congenital limb deficiencies. Vissza
