COMPUTERS AND THEIR USES gives the reader a glimpse into the essential characteristics of digital data-processing machines and their uses.
This book is designed specifically for persons who are interested in acquiring a general knowledge of electronic data processing. It does not, therefore, offer specialized instruction in design, programming, or applications. Instead, it explains the concepts basic to all these areas by means of simplified examples.
Following a brief historical sketch on the evolution of data processing, the author progresses in a scholarly but interesting manner through a discussion of punched card machines, the organization and functions of modern computers, the representation of information, machine logic, the algebra of automata, elements of programming, magnetic tape operations, and programming techniques.
