Computer-Aided Design - CAD - is a new technology spawnedby the electronics revolution. It promises user companies the ability to produce superior designs, reduce costs and bring new products faster to markét, forming a crucial building block for the automated factory of the future. The study concludes that technological capability exists which could form a basis for policies to promote European strength in this vitai technology. The study will be of interest to those people concerned about the position of Europe - and its leading countries - in new technologies and, particularly, to those involved in decisions about the use of CAD. It contains substantial information on national European markets and the leading flrms supplying these. Erik Arnold is a Research Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit, Univei siiy of Sussex, working on policy, skill and employment aspects of technological change. Recent work includes studies of CAD use in the UK, office automation, and the television industry. Vissza
