This is the third edition of Professor Curran's well-known and widely-used Colour Atlas of Histopathology. The book has now been completely revised: there are 804 illustrations all in a new large size, and these have been reproduced from photomicrographs mostly newly taken by the author for this edition. The text, too, has been entirely re-written: it is now more extensive and juxtaposed to each illustration for ease of reference and information. Moreover the format of this new edition has been re-designed to accommodate the large-size illustrations in their relevant grouping, and at the same time give the student the greater convenience in using, carrying and storing a smaller-sized volume.

The general arrangement of the contents of this Atlas follows that of previous editions, which contained a chapter on each of the main systems or organs of the body. There is also an introductory chapter of a general nature, which aims to demonstrate the more important reactions of the tissues in disease and at the same time teach the student the basic language of histopathology, thus enabling him or her to assess the significance of changes in the tissue as revealed by microscopy.
Most of the conditions described and illustrated in the Atlas are common or fairly common diseases, but occasional examples of rare lesions have been included when they illustrate a pathological process with particular clarity. Most of the illustrations are based on paraffin sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, but other techniques less common in use have also been included where these make a specific contribution; and the potential of the newer immunohistochemical methods will also be apparent from the examples included. The index to this edition has been compiled to be as comprehensive and detailed as possible, so that it can be of considerable help to the student using this very basic reference book. The Atlas is intended primarily for undergraduate students, but experience with previous editions suggests that it is likely to prove useful also to postgraduate students training in pathology or another clinical discipline. The author, R. C. Curran, is Leith Professor of Pathology at the University of Birmingham, and Honorary Consultant to the Central Birmingham Health District and the West Midlands Regional Health Authority. He was President of the Royal College of Pathologists from 1981 to 1984. Vissza
