Colloquial Japanese
Within the space of twenty lessons this book introduces almost all the grammatical structures likely to be encountered in spoken Japanese. This should enable the student to acquaint hiinself with the overall framework of spoken Japanese within a relatively short period of time. He is then free to explore the language for himself and to develop fluency by speaking with and listening to native Japanese, as well as being ready to tackle the written language.
The colloquial nature of the course is demonstrated by the fact that most of the material is introduced in the form of short dialogues, presented in a way which makes them easy to practise and learn. As the book is also designed as a basic reference grammar, incorporating a number of new ideas on Japanese linguistic analysis, it will also be useful to those who already know some Japanese. The Authors
H. D. B. Clarke studied Japanese at Sydney University, spent two years studying in Tokyo, and has a Ph.D. on Japanese dialects. In 1972 he was appointed lecturer in Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, In 1978 he returned to the University of Sydney as a senior lecturer in Japanese,
