The fully revised Collins-Robert French Dictionary has, like the first edition — published to great critical acclaim in 1978 — a simple primary function: to facilitate easy, rapid and reliable communication between French and English.
Language never stands still and the dictionary must alsó move on. Reflecting the rapid expansion of both English and French over the years since the first edition, thousands of new references have been added from fields as diverse as computing and politics, medicine and economics, bringing the totál number of references to over 220,000. Retained are all the familiar features which have established the Collins-Robert French Dictionary as the accepted authority in the field:
* emphasis firmly placed on current French and English, both written and spoken
* full and exhaustive treatment of the basic vocabulary in each language, with a wealth of examples illustrating usage, including idioms, set phrases and syntactic constructions
* different meanings and usage clearly signposted throughout, guiding the user to the relevant translation
* style levels marked by a unique system of asterisks and daggers to provide advice and warning to the non-native user
