Recognition of James McAuley's stature as social and literary critic began with his editorship of the literary journal. Quadrant. In 1971 he accepted an invitation to become Reader in Poetry at the University of
Tasmania, and subsequently was appointed Professor of English, a position he occupied until his death in 1976. In 1975 he was made AM.
