Heart Disease D.J. BETTERIDGE and J.M. MORRELL Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most important cause of death in many developed countries and will be an increasing problem for developing nations. Cholesterol is well established as the central risk factor for CHD, yet the introduction of cholesterol-lowering strategies at bóth population and individual levels is very variable and clinícians in somé countries react to the issue with a mixture of scepticism, uncertainty and inertia. Clinjcians' Guide to Lipids and Coronary Heart Disease re-evaluates the backgröund pathophysiology and epidemiology in the context of recently published research to p rövid e the clinician with a contemporary evidence base on which to establish the management of lipid problems. A practical approach is taken to screening, diagnosis and risk assessment, in order to identify those patients at highest risk for whom intervention would be most beneficial and cost effective. Aspects of risk factor modification are discussed, induding lifestyle change and cholesterol lowering by diet and medication. The practical focus is maintained by highlighting specific patient groups who demonstrate clinical importance, management difficulty or remaining controversy. The book provides a clear, comprehensive and up-to-date account of the role of lipid management in the prevention of CHD, the aim being to facilitate the development of sufficient confidence in the clinician to manage lipid problems in both primary and secondary care settings. The authors balance the approaches of the speciálist and the primary care physician throughout the book, not least in the discussion of twenty real-life illustrated examples in the final chapter. D.J. Betteridge is Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, University College London, The Middlesex Hospitál, London, UK. J.M. Morrell is a General Practitioner with a particular interest in CHD prevention. He is alsó actively involved in the education of primary care colleagues and is currently researching the effectiveness of a series of cardiovascular guidelines in primary care. Vissza
