Thomas Similowski is Head of the Intensive Care Unit in the Department of j Pneumology and Professor of Respiratory Medicine, Groupe Hospitalier Pitié-Salpetriere, Paris, France. The author, coauthor, editor, or coeditor of numerous journal articles, book chapters, and books, including Acute Respiratory Failure in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Marcel Dekker, Inc.), he is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society, and the Société de Pneumologie de Langue Française. Coumand Lecturer (2000) of the European Respiratory Society, he received the M.D. degree (1990) from the University of Paris VI, France, and the Ph.D. degree (1995) in physiology from the University of Paris V, France.
William A. Whitelaw is Head of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The author, coauthor, editor, or coeditor of numerous professional papers, abstracts, and books, including Acute Respiratory Failure in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Marcel Dekker, Inc.), he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada). Dr. Whitelaw received the M.D. degree (1968) and the Ph.D. degree (1979) in physiology from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Jean-Philippe Derenne is Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department of Pneumology and Intensive Care at the Groupe Hospitalier Pitié-Salpetriere, Paris, France. The author, coauthor, editor, or coeditor of numerous professional papers, book chapters, and books, including Acute Respiratory Failure in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Marcel Dekker, Inc.), he is a Knight of the Legion of Honor. Listed among the leaders of the French pathophysiological school on COPD since the early 1980s, he received the M.D. degree (1972) from the University of Paris VI, France.
