The importance of sexual abnormality has
grown in recent years until it is now an
accepted part of medicine. Since probably
more than five per cent, of the population
suffers from some sexual malady its
importance cannot be underestimated.
Obviously the general practitioner and the
specialist in other branches of medicine
than psychiatry should have knowledge
of this subject. Moreover, its legal and
social importance makes it essential that
lawyers, sociologists, probation officers,
etc., should have a reliable textbook to
which they can refer.
Psychosexual disorders are definite
diseases and are the cause of much
unhappiness. Although in a more tolerant
society many people now accept that it is
cruel to persecute and condemn those
who suffer from them, the need for
prevention and treatment remains as great
as ever because the sufferers cannot lead
a normal life.

For this new edition the text has been
thoroughly revised and brought up to
date. No attempt has been made to pile
up an unwieldy mass of facts to confirm
what seems already proved, and where
proof and descriptions seem adequate
the text has not been expanded. Where
new knowledge has become available
then this has been included in full. The
references have been revised and all new
references that are relevant have been
