Peter Whelan's first work for the theatre was a collaboration with Don Kincaid on a documentary musical - Lakota, the story of the Sioux massacre at Wounded Knee Creek. He collaborated with Les Darbon on Double Edge, which ran for eight months at the Vaudeville, before writing Captain Swing which was premiered by the RSC at The Other Place in 1978. His last play, The Accrington Pals, had a very successful run at The Warehouse in 1981. As with Clay both Captain Swing and The Accrington Pals were directed by Bill Alexander. His last play, The Accrington Pals, had a very successful run at The Warehouse in 1981. As with Clay both Captain Swing and The Accrington Pals were directed by Bill Alexander. On the Staffordshire/Derbyshire borders, in what would once have been called a remote corner of England, three generations share a converted hill farm turned pottery studio. With their sixteen year old son and octogenarian mother, Micky and her husband Bert lead a quiet, but not untroubled existence. The arrival from a more pressurised life in West Germany of Win and Pat, their inseparable teenage friends of years ago, starts a comedy of embarrassments as the foursome pick their way through past entanglements and future intentions. Yet it is not past or future that finally confronts them, but an implacable present, as the world beyond draws nearer, enclosing the isolated farm. The play is about the unique times we now live in, where what seem very distant terrors threaten to blight our most private and basic freedom - that of choosing how we shall live together. The RSC Playtexts are a joint publishing venture by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Methuen. This new series of programme texts is exclusively for productions at the RSC's small theatres: The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon; the Gulbenkian Studio for the Company's annual visit to Newcastle upon Tyne and The Pit in the Company's new London home in the Barbican Centre. The series aims to provide the threatregoer with a cheap, accessible and easily readable playtext and the author with a publishing opportunity where perhaps none before existed. : i V Vissza
