Not too many years have passed since colour photography was first introduced and yet it has now become very much a part of everyday life. We see it all around us and we take it for granted. We accept colour - which is, after all, the natural way we see things - to such an extent that black and white images are now so unusual, except in daily newspapers, as to cause a certain amount of comment, and film makers even use black and white film for its very unusualness. Over the years the quality of colour materials, as well as of cameras and lenses, has improved enormously and photographers no longer have to rely on strong, bright colours to achieve impact in their pictures. They can now employ subtlety of lighting and colour composition in much the same way as a painter can mix colours, and for the same reason: to suit the mood of his subject and the feeling he wishes to convey. None has been specially taken for this book and, moreover, they have all been drawn from the files of one company - Colour Library International. Despite the wide diversity, both in subject matter and style, they are all commercial photographs in the sense that they have all been used, or are available for use, commercially.
