In the Russia of the late 1980s—and by implication in Eastern Europe—Mikhail Gorbachev has been attempting to clear the ground for reform, with economic restructuring (perestroika) and a limited opening up of political debate (glasnost). As the Eastern bloc has been known for 40 years for its monolithic rigidity, commentators everywhere were asking: what will happen?
But Gorbachev was not the first to attempt reform in the Eastern bloc. He was following a path very similar to that taken by sections of the Polish and Hungarian leaderships in 1956 and the Czechoslovak leadership in 1968. The reform process will be different today. Russia is another country, in another time. But the experiences of 1956, 1968 and 1980 in Poland are nevertheless all-important for an understanding of the options open in the period ahead. This book gives a vivid account of the struggles that have shaken the Eastern bloc in the 40 years since bureaucratic Communist rule was imposed, as their peoples have again and again risen up to demand democracy and self-government. In these struggles we can see the potential of the upheavals that are undoubtedly to come.
