This is the first comprehensive study of Clarice Cliff—the best-known ceramics designer of ihe Art Deco era. The bold, colourful hand-painted designs that she combined with outrageous, French-inspired Art Deco shapes evoke all the uninhibited spirit of the 1920s and 30s. She added a new style to pottery decoration: landscapes overílowing with cottages embracing rainbow-coloured trees. In these she tran-scended Art Deco to give rise to a very British genre of pottery decoration. And her abstract patterns were inspired by artists from Monet to Modigliani. This volume is a celebration of her great years, the decade of her famous fl/zarre ware between 1928 and 1939.
