The essays in Civilization, Society and Religion reflect Freud's long-standing concern to interpret society and its institutions from a psychoanalytic viewpoint.
In one of the essays which comprise this volume, Group Psychology arid the Analysis of the Ego, Freud goes beyond his earlier studies of individual mental life and examines the features which distinguish individual from group psychology.
In The Future of an Illusion Freud takes the Church as an example of such a group. Finding an analogy between religion and obsessional neurosis, Freud argues persuasively that religious ideas have their basis in illusion, and that the salvation of mankind lies in a fundamental reappraisal of the relation between civilization, religion and science.
Written only a few years before his death, Civilization and Its Discontents develops Freud's earlier themes, and may be regarded as his definitive view of the state of mankind.
