Sir Winston Churchill, Honorary Academician Extraordinary of the Royal Academy of Arts, is the outstanding example of a world statesman who found his chief recreation in painting.
Some of his paintings have been reproduced from time to time, and some have been exhibited, but until now few people have been able to appreciate the whole extent of his work. In this volume there are 73 plates in colour and 429 reproductions in monochrome.
Illustrating virtually all his paintings which are known to have survived, this book forms a kind of pictorial diary of Sir Winston's private life, a personal record of his family and friends, their homes, holidays and travels, across a span of more than forty years. There are a number of portraits, including a fine self-portrait, which appears as the frontispiece, and a variety of still lifes. But it is landscapes, including waterscapes as well as some near abstract seascapes, that form by far the greatest proportion of the whole. Apart from a variety of scenes in England and Scotland, Sir Winston painted especially in southern Europe and Morocco, with occasional forays across the Alps, as well as to the Middle East and North America.

The colour plates, including the familiar as well as the unknown, have been chosen to illustrate as far as possible every type of picture that Sir Winston painted, as well as every style he indulged in - for he was very sensitive to the company of his many artist friends, among them W. R. Sickert and André Dunoyer de Segonzac.
Contrary to legend. Sir Winston gave away more than a hundred of his paintings over the years, and, apart from his wife and family, the list of owners is headed by Her Majesty the Queen and three former Presidents of the United States: Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower. Sir Winston also presented paintings to his immediate friends and colleagues, to those who served him, and to those who assisted him. Such unrecorded generosity would have made the compilation of this book almost impossible without the active co-operation of many people, notably Lady Spencer-Churchill, Sir Winston's widow.
