FRA ANGELICO By Ghristopher Lloyd With 48 colour plates The works of Fra Angelico (c. 1400-1455) are universally admired. This is perhaps due as much to his association with the scheme of decoration in the monastery of San Marco in Florence as to any technical accomplishment. Yet Fra Angelico's paintings exhibit a perfect fusion of form and function. The economy of his style, the powerful simplicity of his forms, the treatment of light and the subtlety of colour testify both to Fra Angelico's personal religious conviction and to his awareness of recent developments in Florentine art. Fra Angelico was one of the leading painters of the first half of the fifteenth century, adopting those principles of Renaissance art established by Brunelleschi and Masaccio and codified by Alberti. His altarpieces and frescoes reveal a far more advanced artist than is often thought to have been the case; in fact, he attempted to illustrate the ideals of Dominican theology in the most modern style available to him. That he succeeded in doing this, sometimes with narratives of the utmost beauty, telis us a great deal about the manner and purpose of early Renaissance art. Ghristopher Lloyd is Assistant Keeper in the Department of Western Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and is the author of Pissarro, in the same series as the present book.
