'Can I lead a spiritual life as long as I'm having a sexual relationship with a young man?'
'You must try to see him as the young Lord Krishna.'
My Guru and His Disciple is not a conventional sequel to Christopher and His Kind but it begins in 1939 when Christopher Isherwood arrived in America where he was to meet Swami Prabhavananda, the head of a Centre in Hollywood for the study and practice of Hindu philosophy.

This sometimes funny, always moving account ofthe Hindu monk who became Christopher Isherwood's spiritual mentor and friend for over thirty years until his death in 1976 offers a loving but in no way pietistic account of their friendship.
During the forties Isherwood lived for a time at the Centre and contemplated becoming a monk, a step much encouraged by the Swami, with whom he was translating the Gita at the time. But this was not to be and Isherwood continued his career as a novelist and screen writer and pursued a life of sensual and emotional search which might have seemed at odds with the spiritual life and ideals of the Swami. One of the delights of their relationship, however, was the amusement they both derived from the contrasts in the differing worlds that claimed them.
In the sixties Christopher Isherwood v^^ote a life of Ramakrishna and visited the Hindu order in India but he remained a writer of physical impressions. My Guru and His Disciple reveals again his ability to recapture the past with breathtaking freshness, wit and magic. Vissza
