Arts, skills and aesthetic concerns that had hitherto beert the preserve of the Japanese aristocracy and warrior elite, together with influences from the provinces and abroad, gradually came to transform the artistic life of the city. Growing affluence and patronage of the merchant class stimulated an unprecedented flowering of all the arts - most notably painting and woodblock prints, but alsó ceramics, lacquer and textiles. This is the first English text to offer an overview of the arts of the Edo period (16IS-1868) as they developed in Japan's four major úrban centres: the imperial city of Kyoto, the shogun capital of Edo, the mercantile centre of Osaka and the cosmopolitan port of Nagasaki. Lavishly illustrated with many exceptional works of art, it surveys the activities of major artists such as Korin, Utamaro and Hokusai as well as introducing other less well-known artists. By examining the complex cultural relationships that resulted from the movement of artists between cities, and between city and country, as well as the growing influence of Chinese and Western art, this book offers an absorbing analysis and originál insights into the diverse artistic developments of this most dynamic period in Japanese history. Christine Guth is an art histórián specializing in the arts of Japan. She has published widely, and has been a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Vissza
