Since the fali of communism in 1989, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe have attracted growing attention from the world as the process ofdemocratization and economic transition have reshaped this region. Despite the growing interest in these countries and peoples, however, the region with all of its diversity and contradictions has resisted simple labels as the photographs in this album show. These photographs give no easy answers about these places somé call the „New Europe," butthey avoid the clichés and instead offer insights into how many live in this new but integrál part of the unified Europe. To understand Europe and its peoples, it is alsó now necessary to understand this region that not too long ago was mostly still sealed behind the iron curtain. The photos is this album were taken by 12 talented photographers from six countries of the region - Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia - who participated in the 2004 "Choice" credit Suisse Masterclass for Photojournalists from Central and Eastern Europe. "...in today's world there can be no democracy without photography. Photographs question. Photographs expose truths, doubts, emotions. Photographs disturb. And when they don't, one can imply that individual freedoms are not quite around the corner..." Róbert Pledge | President, contact Press images "...Tamas Revesz presented to a select group of Eastern European photographers a sly dilemma of considering 'choice' as a subject of photographic inquiry. is it not Iike asking the eye to see vision?..." Alison Morley | Picture Editor, The New York Times Sophisticated Traveler "...Afterthe collapse of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989 and the resulting additional freedoms within the region, the nature of the press changed. There are less and less taboo themes for photojournalists, and even in the most remote villages readers now have access to worldwide information. There is a new challenge for photojournalists to leam how to communicate these new social, political and humán nature issues effectively... Each time l received a portfolio from participant photographers, it was like opening a new window to their countries..." Tamas Revesz I Editor Vissza
