The very word Chihuahua reassures us with its implications of order and exact boundaries and its promise of a distinct content. When I was a schoolboy, my teachers told me that precise terms were necessary for an informed discussion. I believed them then and I do not believe them now. Today, I think the terms, the maps, the charts and the tidy columns of numbers are a drug that lulls us so we do not notice a disintegrating world. Chihuahua, Mexico, one particular entity, is part of that disintegrating world. We will look at it and thereby obliterate the term itself and for a brief, mescaline-feeling moment, glimpse what it and other tidy boundaries are hiding from our eyes. That is the work at hand and the work will proceed with words and pictures.

^ These forty large-format color photographs
explore contemporary urban Chihuahua, Mexico. The brilliant colors, vivid images, and sharp juxtapositions of Chihuahua's vibrant towns and cities reflect a region barreling into an uncertain future but still grappling with its tumultuous past. Gang graffiti scrawled over an abandoned hacienda. Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, and Mickey Mouse wildly lighting up urban storefronts, and the Virgin of Guadalupe, borne on the wings of an angel, emblazoning the square front of a neatly kept residence are t among the images captured in Virgil Hancock's
^ cityscapes. Essayist Charles Bowden peers into
the border society between Mexico and the United States and sees the future of both nations.
