1949 -1962 is an authoritative
account by a well-known interna-
tional expert. Tracing the eco-
nomic conditions through the
century that preceded the Com-
munist victory, this study analyzes
the impact of Marxist-Leninist
theories on China and the series
of intricate improvisations formu-
lated by Mao Tse-tung. From the
first land reform policies to the
current nature of the communes,
this work details Communist agri-
cultural collectivization. Perspec-
tive is given to the drives for
industrialization as prelude to the
transformation of China's urban
economy. The central-planning
apparatus of the Peking regime is
examined in detail as are the
changes of the components of the
national product. This study ex-
plains the current economic crisis
in the perspective of the first and
second five-year plan and the pre-
sent famine is viewed in terms of
heritage and prospects.

Chu-yuan Cheng, Research Pro-
fessor in Asian Studies- at Seton
Hall University, is also Chief In-
vestigator of a research project
concerning Communist China's
Scientific and Engineering Man-
power sponsored by the National
Science Foundation, Washington,
D. C. A former director of the
Research Department, Union Re-
search Institute, Hong Kong, and
the author of numerous books, in-
cluding the penetrating People's
Communes, as well as hundreds of
articles dealing with the Chinese
Communist scene, Professor
Cheng enjoys a reputation rarely
accorded a younger scholar. His
articles published frequently in
several leading Japanese newspa-
pers and his lectures given in
Japan have ranked him among the
foremost China experts in the Far
East. Coming to the United States
in 1959, Professor Cheng has been
widely consulted for his knowledge
of the mainland scene. A frequent
contributor to the learned jour-
nals, Professor Cheng now offers
his acute analysis of the Chinese
Communist economy to the
American public for the first time
