CHESS: East and West Past and Present CHESS, the game of war, was born in India in the sixth or seventh century and is now played the world over. The Metropolitan Museum of Art owns, in tangible form, a history of this universal game-that is, a superb collection of chessmen ranging in date from the seventh to the twentieth century. This book presents more than one hundred of these sets, each one illustrated and described in fascinating detail. In both East and West, ehess pieces, which originally represented the four branches of an army headed by a king with his minister, have become conventionalized, although with many variations in the conventions. The ehess pieces illustrated here reflect not only the fashions and artistic styles of the periods in which they were created, but alsó major historic events and confrontations-domestic and foreign wars, revolutions and uprisings.
