The churches-and the public-were shocked. Man was created by God, they cried. Man was unique, supreme. Bitter arguments and debates raged back and forth over rival views of how life on earth came about. Eventually the scientific world came to agree with Darwin.
His theory may today be generally accepted in the scientific community. Indeed, recent research has shown that human beings are ultimately descended from tree shrews.
