After a five year epic journey around the world, Charles Darwin came up with the theory that was to shake the foundations of nineteenth century society: human beings were related to apes. In his book, ''^The Origin of Species", he set out the revolutionary view that all living things, from ants to elephants, had evolved by natural selection. The fit, the successful, survived to breed: the others, over time, died
The churches-and the public-were shocked. Man was created by God, they cried. Man was unique, supreme. Bitter arguments and debates raged back and forth over rival views of how life on earth came about. Eventually the scientific world came to agree with Darwin.
His theory may today be generally accepted in the scientific community. Indeed, recent research has shown that human beings are ultimately descended from tree shrews. But the world at large still tends to act as the Victorians did - as though we are lords of creation, with every other species subject to... Tovább
