CHARLES BRIDGE
Karel Neubert, Ivo Korán, Milos Suchomel
The Bridge whereby Emperor Charles IV linked his residence with the wealth of the merchants of the Old Town and the Archbishop and canons with the Masters of the University, has been the centre of interest and admiration by scholars and painters for two-hundred years, and in this century the photographers joined their ranks. Many Czech art historians (V. V. Stech, V. Volavka, E. Poche, J. 0. Blazi-cek, Z. Drobna, R. Chadraba and others) have analyzed the Bridge, its towers and statues with emotionally coloured professionalism. The same is true of the photographers (K. Plicka, J. Sudek, J. Drobna, R. This publication sets out to do the same with a different approach. Karel Neubert documents and interprets the works of sculpture in a manner befitting the end of the 20th century, in colour. Ivo Koran does not concentrate on the art historical analysis of the works of art but gives their iconography, including half forgotten stories of the Saints and their deeds, many of which are depicted on the statues. Milos Suchomel presents the reality today in a passage that opens his study: "Anyone who on viewing the sculptural decorations of Charles Bridge assumes that he has in front of him authentic works by Brokoff, Braun, Jackel, Mayer and Severy makes a basic mistake "
Since 1964 the Gallery of the City of Prague has been responsible for the statues on Charles Bridge. They are under the supervision of the Commission of Restoration that was set up in the Gallery, which comprises a staff of professional restorers and art historians. Vissza
