A Novel of the Hani
Hilfy had been crew on The Pride of Chanur when her Aunt Pyanfar, captain of The Pride, gave shelter and protection to the human Tully, shattering the equilibrium of Meetpoint Station and disrupting the complex power balances which existed between the seven races of the Compact. Tully was the sole surviving member of an expedition sent by his own race, a race previously unknown in Compact space, and his presence added a dangerous and potentially deadly element to the intricate interspecies rivalries at Meetpoint. For the information this fugitive held—the potential of a trade contract with a new species—could be the ruin or glory of any of the worlds in Compact space. Pyanfar's actions pitched her crew into the center of a galactic maelstrom which imperiled the peace of the Compact itself. But in the end she won a treasure beyond measuring—the trade contract with Earth.
Now, ten years later, Pyanfar has become the most important personage in the Compact, and Hilfy Chanur is captain of her own vessel, Chanur's Legacy. It should have been the ideal existence for Hilfy, her fondest dream fulfilled. But instead, the young captain finds herself more and more deeply entangled in seemingly insoluble problems.

Besieged with requests by those who seek to gain something from her now famous aunt, and forced to take aboard a male of her race who's been thrown off his own ship, Hilfy is increasingly hard-pressed to take care of the business of the Legacy. So when Meetpoint's stsho stationmaster offers Hilfy a million credits to transport a small, mysterious, "religious" object to a fellow stsho on Urtur Station, it seems like a golden opportunity. It should be an easy run for the Legacy, and a million credits is extremely generous. Perhaps even too generous—especially for a stsho master trader. Yet despite the warnings of those around her, despite her own misgivings, Hilfy feels it's a commission she just can't turn down. But as complications begin to unfold, Hilfy and the Legacy are caught in an ever-tightening web of intrigue. And only time will teil whether the young captain can determine who is truly her ally and who her enemy in this deadly game of interstellar politics
