CHALLENGES is a multimedia project for students who
have been learning English for about four years and who
want to use the language they know to express their own
ideas and needs, and to understand English used spontane-
ously by native speakers.
The project is based on six themes - Somewhere to Live,
Someone to Love, Somewhere to Work, Somewhere to Go,
Something to Say, Something to Do - exploited by each
of the media. These are:
six films
a set of six tapes/cassettes
a set of 72 slides (12 for each theme/unit)
a Students' Book (covering all six themes/units)
a Teacher's Guide
The Students' Book enables students to express their own
ideas and feelings about the unit-themes. Starting from
reading, listening and note-making, chains of language
activities develop the learners' communicative skills from
controlled language practice through to free discussion,
groupwork and individual projects.
The Tapes/Cassettes for each unit contain a Story based

The Students' Book enables students to express their own

The Tapes/Cassettes for each unit contain a Story based
on the soundtrack of the film, a Tape Programme of
listening activities (radio talks, interviews, dialogues,
advertisements and songs) and Tape Exercises for con-
trolled language practice.
The slides are based on the six themes and can be used for
background or discussion work.
The six documentary films show different young English
people facing the problems of contemporary urban society.
The Teacher's Guide contains an introduction to the
project, detailed teaching notes and a complete filmscript
and tapescript.
Each medium offers different language activities and
.demands different learning skills. CHALLENGES will
stimulate students into using English which is directly
relevant to their own needs, and will also help them to
