Lnyone who has visited an art gallery will understand the value of being able to look at paintings close up, to see the way the colours have been used and how the paint has been handled. Now you can have your own personal art gallery in this series of books, The History and Techniques of the Gr-eat Masters. Each book brings you a selection of ten or more famous paintings, magnificently reproduced in full colour, and with actual size details so that you can see the way the artist has worked — just as though the paintings were hanging on your own walls. The text analyses each painting in turn, and the captions tell you exactly which techniques the artist has used to obtain particular effects. Wherever possible, the author provides full information about the types of paint brushes, canvas and priming favoured by the artist, and how the colours were mixed and applied.

Paul Cézanne was one of the greatest geniuses of the nineteenth century, but his work was initially derided by both the critics and the public. He is often grouped with the Impressionists, but although he exhibited with them for a time, his preoccupations were very different. Like them, he was deeply committed to painting directly from nature, whether his subjects were landscapes, srill lifes or portraits, but while they were concerned with rendering fleeting effects of light and atmosphere, he tried to show the underlying and changeless structures as perceived through the artist's eye. His character was a contradictory one, combining prickly arrogance with extreme timidity. He lived with his wife-to-be, Hortense Piquet, for over fifteen years before he dared to tell his father about the relationship. He longed to a be a figure painter but had difficulty approaching models because of his shyness. Even in his old age, when he had become the "grand old man" of painting, he could not bear to be watched at work, fearful that he,might betray some weakness of technique.
But Cézanne was a superb technician and colourist. The power and vibrancy of his mature works are the result of careful and meticulous planning, with each brushstroke placed to give maximum control of colour and tone. He sometimes took days to arrange a still life, and was seldom satisfied with his work, making endless revisions and improvements over a long period of time. His influence on subsequent generations of painters has been immeasurable, and today he is among the most popular ofthe "modern Old iVlasters".
