Trieste is an unusual city - even a strange one. It charms and surprises at the same time. First-time visitors will either be captured by its charm or disappointed, but certainly not indifferent.
The story of Trieste is not an easy one to tell. The many changes it has undergone - architectural and urbanistic, historical and poUt-ical - have kept it at the forefront of history in a breathless quest for extremes. This is a city that has invented and reinvented itself by moving with the ebbs and flows of history. Until the end of the 17th century it was a small town enclosed within its medieval walls, clinging to the hill of San Giusto. A couple of decades later, the establishment of the Free Port had turned it into the port of the Habsburg Empire. Trieste is cantankerous, carping and proud. It does not readily embrace change, but does not stand in its way. On the contrary, as time goes by it takes it on board, makes change its own. This book has the merit of attempting to provide... This book has the merit of attempting to provide an overall view that starts from the past and looks at the present with an eye to the future. And the eye in question belongs to a Triestiner - now critical, now proud - who seems to be on a walkabout with a group of friends, calling from memory what is no more, pointing to this and that along the way, using no particiJar method or scheme, lacing his observations with anecdotes and memories. It is rather like what we all do when we introduce the city to a friend visiting from afar. We don't wish to be didactic, but try to provide enough information for a proper understanding.
Trieste Millennium can act as a significant visiting card for people who come to Trieste and wish to preserve a memory of the lights, forms and colours of such a varied place, and also for those who know it but want to discover what they may have missed in the hurry of everyday life. Vissza
