The spirit of Catholicism derives its meaning and its unity from Catholic affirmations on the nature of God, the reality of Christ, the union of Christ and His Church, and the vocation of man. From the organic relationship of these affirmations flows the entire structure of Catholic belief and practice.
In describing Catholic experience, this volume moves from the predicament of man without God toward the transformation of experience to which Christian faith opens the way. The human need for meaning is answered by the revelation of God in nature: here are presented the Catholic position on reason, the proofs of God, and the elements of natural religion. The sense of human frailty and sinfulness is redeemed through the revelation of God in Christ: here are treated grace and the supernatural, sin, and the Catholic beliefs about Christ. The continuing revelation of God for man in history is given through Christ and His Spirit in the Church: here are treated the central affirmations of the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church as organism and (continued on back flap)

organization, the role of authority and hierarchy, the Mass and the Sacraments, Mariology, and other beliefs.
After discussion of the Catholic interpretation of faith, the interior life of the Catholic is described in its aims and its practices. This is followed by an important section on the values of the Catholic: the ideals which govern Catholic interpretation in such areas as personality, marriage, the family, society and the state, education, economics, and morality.
The volume concludes with the Catholic positions on time and eternity, Purgatory, and the Four Last Things (Death, Judgment, Hell, Heaven).
These major areas are exemplified in classic writings from the Scriptures, the liturgy, the Fathers of the Church, papal pronouncements, and the theological and philosophical traditions. The volume becomes both a useful reference and a readable account of one of the most vital religious movements in history. Vissza
