CATHEDRAL AND CITY
1977 witnessed two remarkable anniversaries in St Albans - that of the commencement of the building of the great Norman abbey by Abbot Paul de Caen in 1077, and the centenary of the installation of Thomas Claughton as the first Bishop of the nev^ly-established see of St Albans. Though of special significance to Alb3,nians and to those who have subsequently adopted St Albans as their home town, these events throw important light on issues of much wider historical importance, as does much else that occurred in and around St Albans during its period of more than 2000 years of recorded occupation, not least in 209AD the beheading of Alban, the first English martyr, on the site of the present cathedral.

To draw attention to this three-way relationship, between the local event and the national scene, the abbey and the town, and between the cathedral and the diocese, Robert Runcie, the present Bishop of St Albans, commissioned a special course of lectures to be given in the Spring of 1977 by a group of eminent historians, several of whom were already associated with St Albans through their own work. Their brief was to describe St Albans at certain selected periods of importance in terms of the latest national understanding of major historical periods and developments. Cathedral and City contains the text of these lectures.
