On February 28, 1704, Mercy Carter is kidnapped from her home in Deerfield, Massachusetts. On that freezing cold night, Indians infiltrate the small settlement and Mercy is separated from her family, some of whom do not survive. She and hundreds of other settlers are forced to walk the three hundred miles north to a Kahnawake Indian village in Canada.
At first Mercy s only hope is that the English government in Boston will send ransom for her and the other white settlers. But as time goes by, Mercy thinks less and less of ransom, of Deerfield, and even of her "English" family. As she discovers that the savages are not as savage as she thought and as their ways become her ways, Mercy begins to wonder: If ransom comes, will she take it?
