The geography of Maryland encompasses a broad range of terrain from the lonely sea barrier isle of Assateague to the steep mountains of the Appalachian Divide. Maryland's most prominent feature, the Chesapeake Bay, gives her a total shoreline of more than 5,000 miles. World famous oysters, crabs, and clams come from the Bay and dozens of waterfront towns are dependent on these fisheries. Pleasure craft fill numerous harbors, including historic Annapolis, and freighters dock frequently in Baltimore — one of the world's great ports. Sweeping across a portion of the Delmarva Peninsula, the Eastern Shore has maintained a traditional and independent lifestyle based on agriculture and fishing.

A space shuttle touches down on monitors at Coddard Space Flight Center, the auctioneer's voice signals high bidder at a tobacco auction, and sunbathers fill the popular Ocean City beach. Here too is Fort McHenry, midshipmen on Commencement Day, and the stately Wye Oak shading another generation of Marylanders under its spreading branches.
