Carbohydrates are a profoundly important class of organic compound.
Their chemical and enzymatic transformation provides routes to many of
the most important commercial organic compounds. It is now realized
that the carbohydrate portions of glycoproteins and glycolipids play an
important role in their biochemistry; simple carbohydrates have been
found to be a good source of chirality for incorporation into syntheses.
Therefore an increasing number of chemists and biochemists with a
diverse range of interests now have a pronounced need for accurate
physical data and literature citations on carbohydrates in a well-organised and well-indexed form.
This book has been evolved to meet that need. It contains systematically arranged and indexed data on several thousand carbohydrates, organised in such a way as to make available almost instantaneous access
by name, molecular formula, CAS registry number or type of compound.

The compilation is based initially on the carbohydrate entries from the
5th edition of the Dictionary of Organic Compounds and supplements.
However, to produce this volume, every entry has been carefully scrutinised and updated where necessary and many new compounds have been
added to produce a volume containing roughly twice as much material as
originally present.
A valuable additional feature is a computer-generated type of compound index, which sorts all carbohydrates in the Sourcebook into one or
more of 90 classes enabling all carbohydrates of a certain type (for
example 2-amino-2-deoxy sugars) to be readily located.
