CANCER: The Misguided Cell
David M. Prescott and Abraham S. Flexer
Few texts about cancer are so comprehensive yet so understandable as CANCER: THE MISGUIDED CELL. The authors—an eminent cell biologist and a biologist-science writer—provide a scientific basis for understanding cancer and for sorting out the conflicting claims and counterclaims about the causes and cures of cancer that are reported daily in the news media.
In the early chapters, the authors explain clearly the central concepts of modern cellular and molecular biology upon which current views of cancer are based. They then establish that the vast majority of cancers may be caused by environmental agents such as chemicals and radiation that induce mutations, and by viruses that alter the genetic makeup of the cell. After reviewing present methods for treating human cancers, they argue that enough is now known about the disease to support effective programs to prevent cancer. The concluding chapter explores some...

DAVID M. PRESCOTT is Disdnguished Professor of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado. He received his B.A. from Wesleyan University and his Ph. D. from the University of California, Berkeley. After serving on the faculty at the UCLA Medical School and at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, he was appointed Professor and Chairman of Anatomy at the University of Colorado Medical School. In 1966 he moved to the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he has taught courses on the biology of cancer and has done research on the molecular and genetic basis of cell reproduction and on the structure of genes and chromosomes. Dr. Prescott is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the author of Reproduction of Eukaryotic Cells (1976), editor of a 20 volume series. Methods in Cell Biology, and coeditor of Cell Biology: A Comprehensive Treatise, and he has served on the editorial boards of Experimental Cell Research, journal of Cell Science, and Cancer Research. He is a consultant to the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes.
ABRAHAM S. FLEXER received his B.A. from Clark University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He has served on the faculties of the Biological Laboratories of Harvard University and the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology of the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Flexer has edited and has contributed to numerous undergraduate textbooks in biology. He has also helped to develop curriculum and instructional materials in the sciences for students of all ages and educational levels.
