Its 260 images, culled from thousands of photographs taken by Canada's best photographers, were chosen through the discerning eye of Lorraine Monk, Executive Producer for the Still Photography Division of the National Film Board of Canada. Her idea was to find photographs which would depict the vast scope of Canada's natural beauty throughout the seasons. And find them she did-taken by some of Canada's finest photographers, spanning the land from ocean to ocean, from the forty-ninth parallel to the Arctic. Each season is presented as a distinct reality which must be appreciated for the gifts it gives to those who live within it, as well as for the power it holds over the quality of their lives. Design of Canada/A year of the land was planned and directed by the late Allan Fleming. The application of his talent to this book resulted in setting the standard with which all subsequent Canadian photographic books were compared. During the eleven years that Canada/A year of the land has been in print, it has been enjoyed by thousands and it has offered them fresh insights into Canada as a diverse and exciting country. The publishers are pleased now to be able to present this new edition, produced with the same care and high quality of craftsmanship as the original. While the content is complete and unabridged, this edition features a lighter weight of paper than the original and a dust jacket in place of a slipcase. The publishers hope that with this new edition, they will welcome many more people to Canada/A year of the land.
Lorraine Monk, Executive Producer for the Still Photography Division of the National Film Board of Canada, has been involved since 1960 in a number of its major policy changes. One of these resulted in freelance photographers becoming more active in National Film Board activities. In 1967 Lorraine Monk produced three Centennial books, one of which was Canada/A year of the land. It became a national bestseller and won numerous design, printing and photographic awards. Since then she has gone on to produce a wide range of major photographic exhibitions and award winning publications that view Canada and Canadians through the art of leading Canadian photographers. She was responsible for the 1967 opening of the National Film Board Photo Gallery in Ottawa where major Canadian photographers exhibit their work, and in that same year launched a highly successful program of touring photographic exhibitions across Canada and around the world. Appointed Member of the Order of Canada in 1973, Lorraine Monk was named Honorary Board Chairman of the Photo Ecology Foundation of America in 1976 and is presently on the Advisory Committee of the International Center for Photography in New York. She is currently working on plans to establish a Canadian Centre for Photography, which would house archives and galleries, encourage research and experimentation, and concern itself with all aspects of still photography. Her most recent publishing triumph was the production of Between Friends/Entre Amis, Canada's gift to the United States for the American bicentennial. Allan Fleming, a leader in his field for almost twenty years, was a designer of books, advertising, corporate symbols and art catalogues. He had a varied career, with time spent designing in art studios, type composition houses, magazines, advertising agencies and publishing houses, as well as lecturing on typography at the Ontario College of Art. He was the first Fellow of the Graphic Designers of Canada, and a member of the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1967 he helped design Canada/A year of the land, and the year following its success he joined the University of Toronto Press, where the bulk of his work as a book designer was accomplished. Allan Fleming's tireless campaign on behalf of visual beauty has had a significant influence on graphic design throughout Canada. Perhaps his most lasting contribution lies with the influence he left on those he taught at the Ontario College of Art. The untimely death of Allan Fleming in December 1977 left the publishing world bereft of one of its most innovative and imaginative proponents of creative book design.
